At Epoxy & Cie Canada, we’ve done our homework and research!
The story begins in 1909 when the Russian chemist Prileschajew discovered that olefins reacted with perbenzoic acid to give an epoxy function. But the first synthesis dates back to the 1940s by the Swiss Pierre Castan and the American Sylvan Greenlee! Both simultaneously claimed the paternity of a thermosetting plastic material composed of a resin and a hardener. However, it soon became apparent that epoxy had much more useful properties. And in the 1950s, industrial production began with a growing demand for this high-performance coating. It was in the 1960s that the evolution began with more than fifty distinct chemical structures that were developed with nuances in terms of molecular weight, isomerism and purity. With an infinite variety of formulas and with a hundred or so cross-linking agents, modifiers, diluents, organic or inorganic fillers, this made epoxies an unprecedented technological advance over resins.
The multiple facets and use of epoxy!
Over the years, the use of epoxy has spread to the aerospace industry, the electronics, electrical, automotive and marine sectors, as well as to other sectors such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, wind energy, civil engineering, the automotive industry, packaging, electronic devices, sports and leisure activities, household appliances and of course construction.
Epoxy resins belong to a family of versatile synthetic products used as adhesion agents for polymer coatings, adhesives, seals and matrices of composite materials or fibre-reinforced plastics. They can be mixed with various chemical catalysts, offering great advantages in terms of durability, reliability and safety.
